Theme: In Our Nature

With the changing climate, we are hard pressed to re-examine the close relationship we share with our natural environment. SWF invites you to get back to basics and contemplate: What’s truly in our nature – as humans, as writers and readers, as global citizens – navigating the world we live in?

Inspiration behind 2024’s Key Visual

The inspiration comes from army camouflage uniform, where odd-shaped patterns in various earthy colours serve as abstract representations of the natural environment that a soldier needs to blend into. Stripped of any violent imagery, such military motifs are appropriated as a tribute to SWF 2024 festival theme in a playful manner, where organic shapes morph into silhouettes of trees, plants, animals and people: for example, a boy representing innocence and exuberance (children’s literature), a teenage girl representing coming of age and curiosity (fiction), an old man representing wisdom and active ageing (non-fiction), a woman representing beauty and a nurturing maternal instinct (poetry), a dog representing loyalty and friendliness, a butterfly representing the quest for freedom. The varied colour palette signifies a harmony in biodiversity.
