With the meteoric rise of TikTok, social media has birthed an economy of influence that reshapes what we eat and shop, and how we create content and consume entertainment. Yet, as we cultivate new visual cultures, aesthetic tastemakers and commercial potential, could it be that influencers are responding with “shadow practices” – ethically ambiguous, quietly obscured, but calculated activities undertaken out of sight – to wrestle the viewer’s attention back to themselves?
