DESCRIPTION

Beijing-based journalist Ian Johnson looks at a nation’s reawakening to religion in post-Mao China, while Singaporean novelist Catherine Lim examines how one’s sense of mortality becomes acute after the age of 65. The writers will exchange ideas and insights as to the allure of religion and what it means in the 21st century.

Ian Johnson is a Beijing-based writer who specialises in religion and values. A Pulitzer Prize winner, he also recently received the Shorenstein Journalism Award from Stanford University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center, which honours journalists for a distinguished body of work about Asia.

Singapore

Catherine Lim has published 20 books, including short story collections, novels and essays. Some of her books have been used as literature texts in schools and colleges. Awards and recognition she has received include the SEA Write Award, an honorary doctorate in literature from Australia’s Murdoch University, and a place in the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame by the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations.
