DESCRIPTION

At Singapore Writers Week 1995, Kirpal Singh took part in a panel discussion titled ‘Writers and Media – Friend or Foe?’. The media scene has undergone major upheavals since then, and Singh will discuss new alliances and enemies with visual documentarian Sim Chi Yin and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Ian Johnson.

Kirpal Singh is internationally acclaimed as a writer who does not follow in anyone’s footsteps, having carved a creative self which is hard to define. He is a keenly sought-after writer and has appeared at numerous arts/literary festivals around the world. Currently, he is working on a new book of poems, Nestled Dreams, and also a memoir which is going to prove disturbing.

Ian Johnson is a Beijing-based writer who specialises in religion and values. A Pulitzer Prize winner, he also recently received the Shorenstein Journalism Award from Stanford University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center, which honours journalists for a distinguished body of work about Asia.

Sim Chi Yin

Singapore

Sim Chi Yin is a Singaporean visual documentarian and researcher focused on projects in Asia, working in photography, film, sound and text. Based in Beijing, she has done video and multimedia commissions for Time, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Le Monde and The New Yorker. Chi Yin was a Magnum Foundation Human Rights and Photography fellow at New York University in 2010 and a finalist for the W Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography in 2013.
