DESCRIPTION

Writers of historical fiction tread a fine line between accuracy and speculation as they unearth tales from bygone days. Is it important to stay close to the facts, or is there such a thing as too much information? Three authors share their artistic decisions when it comes to setting their stories in the past.

Dawn Farnham is the author of The Straits Quartet, a saga set in 19th-century Singapore, and A Crowd of Twisted Things, a mystery set against the backdrop of the Maria Hertogh custody case and the riots that ensued. The latter book will be relaunched at the Singapore Writers Festival as Finding Maria.

Kaitlin Solimine

US - Singapore

Kaitlin Solimine is the author of Empire of Glass which was shortlisted for the 2017 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize. She was a Fulbright fellow in China and has received several awards for her writing, including the Dzanc Books/Disquiet International Award judged by Colson Whitehead. She has been published in National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, Guernica Magazine, The Huffington Post, China Daily, and many anthologies. Kaitlin is co-founder of Hippo Reads, a network connecting academics to the public.

Warran Kalasegaran studied politics with international studies at the University of Warwick. He graduated with a master’s of public policy from the University of Tokyo, where he wrote Lieutenant Kurosawa’s Errand Boy, his first novel. He recently started working at Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
