Daren Shiau

Bio
Born in 1971, Daren is a lawyer in private practice. His novel Heartland (1999) was cited by travel guide Lonely Planet as the “definitive Singapore novel” and awarded the Singapore Literature Prize’s Commendation Award. Chosen by The Straits Times as among the 10 best books of the year, it is a GCE ‘O’ Level English Literature textbook. Daren has also published a poetry collection, Peninsular: Archipelagoes and Other Islands (2002), and a seminal book of microfiction, Velouria (2007). His stories and poems have been translated into five languages and anthologised in Italy and Australia. He is the National Arts Council’s Young Artist of the Year in 2002.


What book would you like to snuggle under covers with, and why?
"I would like to go to bed with a book by Haruki Murakami, illustrations of Adrian Tomine, or the latest copy of MONOCLE. Someone once said to me: “always go to bed with what you most want to wake up to”.  I could not agree more."
