Sharing Borders: Singapore / Malaysia Writers Symposium 2009

The distinctive literatures of Singapore and Malaysia in English have come a long way since their beginnings some 60 years ago. This Symposium, organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore and sponsored by Singapore’s National Arts Council and National Library Board, brings together scholars and writers to address the engagement of the two countries’ literatures. Plenary sessions, workshops and a panel discussion will be aptly rounded up by the launch of a two-volume milestone study of Singaporean and Malaysian literature in English.

Poetry in the Park

Venue : Raffles Institution, Humanities Hub
Poetry in the Park is a gallery walk down Singapore's literary history, featuring prominent poets from the Rafflesian community (including Aaron Lee, Aaron Maniam, Alvin Pang, Kirpal Singh and Yong Shu Hoong). Hosted by Raffles Institution, the event is a showcase and celebration of Rafflesian writers, who have been pioneers in Singapore's literary tradition since the 19th Century. The programme will feature live readings of exhibited poems by the poets followed by BooksActually’s “Poet x Poet”-inspired dialogue session, where the poets and audience can engage in a discussion to critique the poems, or read their own.

Discovering New Writers, Finding New Readers: An International Perspective

Catalyst Central and Italian publisher, Metropoli d'Asia, will be launching a joint Literary Prize (Fiction) for Singaporeans. The winner will be published in English (in Singapore) and Italian (in Italy), and guaranteed €3000 in royalties.
At the launch, there will also be a discussion between the editors of the Singaporean-Italian anthology of poetry “Double Skin” (Alvin Pang and Tizanio Fratus) and David Fedo, an American poet and educator who was one of the anthology reviewers. They will discuss the issues and trends in poetry writing, editing and translation across Singapore, Italy and America.

Uniquely Singapore Poetry Writing Competition 2009

In collaboration with SWF 2009, Raffles Institution is organising this poetry writing competition in the hope of nurturing young Singapore writers in our midst. The competition will be a good platform for budding writers to hone their craft and express their thoughts about Singapore through poetry. At this Grand Finals event, shortlisted students will perform their own poems before the winners are unveiled.

Get out of your armchair and experience literature! Experience Singapore Literature is National Library Board’s initiative to create an accessible platform for the showcase of Singapore Literature. It adopts the experiential approach with the belief that literature is best encountered and remembered through experience.

Are you a night owl curious about the local literary scene? Your experience starts at the National Library, from which the guided walk will give you an overview of Singapore Literature past and present. You’ll also get to explore the unseen and the unknowns that are guaranteed to raise some goose bumps.
Breakfast Club and Experience Singapore Literature Symposium
Date: Sat 31 Oct Time: 9.30am – 2.00pm Venue: The POD, Level 16, National Library Building Inclusive of breakfast & lunch. The Breakfast Club, from 10am to 12pm, will let you come face to face with Singapore iconic writers like Colin Cheong (Tangerine), Stella Kon (Emily of Emerald Hill), Catherine Lim (The Bondmaid) and Adrian Tan (The Teenage Textbook). This will be followed by the Symposium (entitled Explore Singapore Literature), which will start at 12.30pm. Through lively discussion by a distinguished panel of speakers, you will explore the depth, beauty and future of Singapore Literature.

NaNoWriMo Kickoff Launch

White Dot Competition and Temasek Novel Competition

This event will be held in Malay.
ASAS ’50 and Darul Andalus are working hand-in-hand towards the publication of seven books ranging from the magical delights of children literature to compact anthologies of short stories and poetry from some of Singapore’s best Malay literary talents as well as promising newcomers. The launching of these books is the result of the Sayembara Noktah Putih (White Dot Competition), which will also herald the start of a new edition of the Sayembara Novel Temasek (Temasek Novel Competition).

Sayembara Noktah Putih and Sayembara Novel Temasek ASAS ’50 dan Darul Andalus sedang bekerjasama dengan gigih untuk menerbitkan tujuh buah buku yang terdiri daripada sastera kanak-kanak yang penuh keajaiban yang menyeronokkan. Penerbitan karya ini juga meliputi kumpulan cerpen dan puisi yang padat hasil pena beberapa bakat-bakat sasterawan Melayu Singapura yang terbaik serta pendatang-pendatang baru yang kebolehannya telah terserlah. Pelancaran buku ini menjadi nyata hasil daripada Sayembara Noktah Putih, yang juga menandakan permulaan suatu edisi baru Sayembara Novel Temasek.

Make a date with members of Magdalena (Singapore), a group of local arts practitioners that promotes learning and networking among women in the creative arts, for a reading of excerpts from their latest plays and short prose.
