PASSAGES
A unique community project whereby Singapore writers visited low-income families to glean inspiration for original short stories - works of fiction - that speak of how human dignity can thrive in all kinds of circumstances. In so doing, they unearthed personal stories that may otherwise have gone unheard.

KISAH SERIBU DINAR
Oleh Hassan Hasaa'ree Ali
"WAHAI ANAK ADAM! PADAMU TELAH ADA KECUKUPAN, NAMUN ENGKAU MASIH SAJA MENCARI-CARI APA YANG NANTINYA AKAN MENJADIKAN ENGKAU MELAMPAUI BATAS"
- (Riwayat Ibnu 'Adi & Baihaqi)
Bunyi guruh di kaki langit membuat Abbas meneroka ingatan;

Dempsey Hill merupa taman permainan beliau. Hidupnya indah.

TALE OF A THOUSAND DINARS
By Hassan Hasaa'Ree Ali
Translated from Malay by Muhammad Ridzal Abdul Hamid
THE PROPHET (PEACE BE UPON HIM) SAID: "THERE ARE TWO BLESSINGS WHICH MANY PEOPLE LOSE: (THEY ARE) HEALTH AND FREE TIME FOR DOING GOOD."
- SAHÎH AL-BUKHÂRÎ

The low rumble of thunder triggers in Abbas a series of memories:

Dempsey Hill was his playground. Life was beautiful. It pleased Abbas tremendously every time heads whipped around to catch his arrival in his convertible.

In fact, every time he attended a wedding on Sundays, he would purposely look for a parking lot close to the venue so that the convertible could be easily seen by all the guests. If there was no lot available near the venue, Abbas would make sure to drive one round around the carpark to ensure that everyone had a chance to take notice of his car.
