The National Arts Council

The National Arts Council (NAC) was set up as a statutory board in September 1991 to spearhead the development of the arts in Singapore.

Anchored on the twin strategies of excellence and engagement in the arts, the Council aims to build a vibrant arts sector by creating a conducive environment where the arts is accessible to all and artistic talents have the necessary resources and capabilities to excel and achieve sustainability in the long term.

To develop artistic talents in the performing, visual and literary arts, the Council provides total support through grants, training, arts housing subsidies, commissioning of works and overseas presentations. It adopts a holistic approach to develop the entire value chain, from seedling arts start-ups, nurturing and developing artists, arts groups and arts businesses, to internationalization.

NAC also organizes major festivals, events and competitions to showcase local and international talents, as well as to identify new talents. Arts awards are given to artists in recognition of artistic excellence and to patrons for arts sponsorship.

The Arts House (managed by The Old Parliament House Ltd)

Occupying the 182-year old building which was the former Parliament House and Singapore’s first Court House, The Arts House is a multidisciplinary arts centre that offers visitors a broad spectrum of activities ranging from contemporary arts and entertainment events to lifestyle and food & beverage options. Since its opening in March 2004, The Arts House has also been championing the Singapore arts and creative scene, playing consultative and developmental roles in bridging the connections between the arts and artists with various audiences including public agencies, private corporations and individual supporters of the arts as well.

With a strong intent to promote and showcase Singapore artists and their artworks locally and internationally, The Arts House has introduced numerous initiatives like The Business Times Budding Artists Fund that provides young children with opportunities to engage in, learn and showcase their artistic talents; the Spotlight series which encourage artistic, business and humanitarian exchanges and exploration of new partnerships between Singapore and her counterparts in emerging / transitional markets in the world; and the Asia on the Edge festival that showcases Asia’s thought leaders, innovators and artists to deepen cultural, social and economic engagement within Asia and the world.

Since 2004, literary arts activities has also been one of The Arts House’s key areas of focus, as seen in its commitment to co-organise the Singapore Writers Festival from 2007 which signifies The Arts House’s continued dedication to the development of the literary arts in Singapore.

Amongst other endeavours that The Arts House has ventured into, retail concepts like The Shop (Singapore Design) and Earshot (Singapore | Music | Books | Film) have also provided multiple platforms for Singapore artists to widen their reach and distribution networks.
